Class Description
The Akira-class is a heavy cruiser with an emphasis on long-range combat. It was designed during the waning years of the Cardassian border wars, intended to replace aging ships such as the Excelsior and Miranda classes as Starfleet's primary cruiser-class peacekeeping vessel. While the border wars were already drawing to an end by the time the first ships of the class were built, the appearance of the Borg and later the Dominion spurred Starfleet to put them into wide-scale production.
The ship is technically not a warship, simply "combat-biased", and unlike the later Defiant-class the Akira has considerable space devoted to research and crew comfort. While the ship has a light phaser armament for its size, it carries an unprecedented fifteen torpedo tubes, with magazine space to match. It also has a through-deck hangar design that allows easier simultaneous launch and recovery operations from fore and aft, making it a serviceable light carrier. This makes it an excellent choice for carrying shuttles for planetary disaster relief or fighters to provide air support for marine operations and fleet actions.
The Akira-class served with distinction during the Dominion War and production of upgraded versions continues. They are often used for defensive patrols, peacekeeping actions, and exploration in dangerous areas.
